Abstract

Mine slopes play a vital role in mining operations, making slope stability one of the most critical geotechnical challenges in the mining industry. Careful slope design is essential to ensure operational safety; however, continuous monitoring remains necessary because stable slopes may become unstable due to ground movement that can eventually trigger slope failure. One of the most advanced monitoring technologies is the GroundProbe Slope Stability Radar (SSR-XT), a ground-based radar system capable of measuring displacement with an accuracy of up to 0.04 mm. Its rapid, real-time data acquisition enables early detection of slope deformation and potential failures. This study was conducted at PT Cipta Kridatma in the PIT KGU area using SSR monitoring data from pixel coordinates x = 65, y = 26 and x = 167, y = 25 during January 2026. The observed deformation behavior was predominantly linear, with several regressive deformation events and one progressive deformation event that resulted in a slope failure on January 28, 2026, at 13:38. Failure prediction was performed using the inverse velocity method with MonitorIQ and Microsoft Excel. Back-analysis estimated the failure time at 14:28. Before failure, the monitored slope recorded a cumulative displacement of 627 mm and a velocity of 8.44 mm/hour. The failure covered approximately 2,164 m², with an estimated volume of 21,641 m³ and mass of 56,267 tons. These findings demonstrate the effectiveness of SSR monitoring and the inverse velocity method for improving slope failure prediction and geotechnical risk management.
